Carry On by Rainbow Rowell | Published October 6th 2015 by St. Martin’s Griffin | Source: Purchased | Rating: 5 stars
Simon Snow just wants to relax and savor his last year at the Watford School of Magicks, but no one will let him. His girlfriend broke up with him, his best friend is a pest, and his mentor keeps trying to hide him away in the mountains where maybe he’ll be safe. Simon can’t even enjoy the fact that his roommate and longtime nemesis is missing, because he can’t stop worrying about the evil git. Plus there are ghosts. And vampires. And actual evil things trying to shut Simon down. When you’re the most powerful magician the world has ever known, you never get to relax and savor anything.
Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story — but far, far more monsters.
I read Fangirl back in the day, what was it 2 years ago now? And I adored it! As I’m sure most people did. How can you not love Levi? Who can you possibly love more than Levi? Well, I’ll tell you. Baz. Baz is who I love more than Levi. I love this little brooding vampire mage so damn much that being done with the book is causing me actual pain. Okay I’m being dramatic, but I need you to understand how important these characters are… especially Baz.
Carry On is Rainbow’s own version of The World of Mage’s and Simon Snow’s story. It’s not “Gemma T. Leslie’s” and it’s not even Cath’s fan fiction, it’s all Rainbow. (by the way, trying to explain this to a non-book nerd is so difficult by the way)
We all know that Baz and Simon are totally in love with each other and that there is lots of kissing, so I’m not spoiling anything for you. Even the gorgeous UK hardcover of the book shows our OTP lip locked underneath the dust jacket and I need this copy so so bad! But yes, kissing, it does happen people. It takes awhile to get there so don’t get discouraged because once you’re there it’s like the gates of heaven have literally opened up for you and nothing in the world can hurt you. I’m pretty certain I heard angels singing in the distance when it happened. Yes it is that good! I like to exaggerate, it’s a thing I do, but I promise this isn’t an exaggeration!
So let’s talk plot. Because this book isn’t just a bunch of random words leading up to some sexy boy on boy action, there’s a whole story going on! Rainbow does an amazing job delivering us a fresh story while also making sure we feel as though we’ve actually known these characters for 8 full books! Imagine just reading the last Harry Potter, you’d have no clue what was happening, you wouldn’t be attached tot he characters, and it just wouldn’t be a fun experience. But we get a lot of information on each character and a lot of insights to possible previous plot points, and given the fact that we learn a lot in Fangirl we do have those relationships with these characters already. I didn’t once feel like I didn’t know who Simon and Baz were, and everything they did in the book made total sense to me. So that right there makes this book special, and on top of that the adventure that these characters go on is so engrossing you are not going to want to put the book down.
Some of my favorite things from this book were the spells. Rainbow’s magical world is unlike any other I’ve ever read, and that’s because there is humor. The spells that the characters have to speak to make their magic work are brilliant! Here are some examples:
Finding spell: “Scooby Doo, where are you?”
Barrier spell: “U can’t touch this”
Cloaking spell: “These aren’t the droids you’re looking for”
And there are SO many more, but I don’t want to get too spoilery. I adore the spells, and if I could live in any magical universe, it would be this one.
So I’m definitely giving Carry On a perfect 5 star rating, and to tell you the truth I’m ready to read it again. However since my TBR pile is towering over me, Baz will have to wait.
