What does a guy think?
By Nicolas Souza
Hello Initiates! The Divergent release is quickly approaching, and trisandfour.com thought it would be fun to have a different point of view on this thing that is Divergent.
First off, hello everyone. I’m Nic, husband of Melissa and friend to April. This is my first post for trisandfour.com, and I’m excited for you to read my thoughts on the film. I have read Divergent and Insurgent, though I haven’t read Allegiant just yet, I’m in the middle of book 3 of Game of Thrones (ugh, its sooo long).
Before I get into too much analysis, I really enjoyed this movie. Melissa’s younger sister and I had the opportunity to go see it, while representing trisandfour.com, at the San Francisco red carpet a few weeks ago.
I believe this movie does the book justice. Director Neil Burger has taken some creative liberties with the subject matter, but the essence of what the book Divergent was remains intact. For the most part, I think the casting is spot on. I mean, let’s be honest, who doesn’t think Theo James IS Four?! Other characters were fantastic as well. Specifically Eric (Jai Courtney) and Peter (Miles Teller) stand out from the Dauntless, while Kate Winslet, as Jeanine, plays a fantastic villain. Although I didn’t buy into Shailene as Tris at the beginning, she won me over toward the end.
Rather than giving you a plot synopsis I’m taking this review down a different road. One, cause I know most people reading this have already read the book and know what is going to happen. And two, there are bound to be several other reviews posted on trisandfour.com for you to read through.
Some ladies might be wondering if they take their man to see this movie, will they like it. Hopefully I can assist you with this. As I said, I enjoyed this movie. While I did read the books, I think your average guy that hasn’t read the book will also enjoy the movie. Here is a list of reasons why I think your man might like Divergent.
Reason one: Shailene is nice to look at. If you aren’t picking up what I’m putting down, she is a hottie.
Reason two: The story is good. Rather than some ridiculous vampire werewolf weird love triangle, you get an intriguing post-apocalyptic tale about a girl finding who she is in a cast system society that separates people by their virtues rather than their skills.
I know not all guys will fall into this category, but it’s a reason I’m listing, because I can, Reason three: The cast turns in awesome performances. The entirety of the cast has at least some acting chops, more than just blank stares and mouth breathing…
Reason four: Dauntless seem like a bunch of badasses. I know those that have read the book know that Dauntless is in fact the faction for badasses, but the movie does a good job at making them appear as the badasses of the five factions.
Reason five: Did I mention guys will like looking at Shailene? Yes? OK, good.
Lastly, this is something that most people wouldn’t care about. I still wanted to make note of it. As a guy, it was nice to watch a movie targeting the female demographic and not having the male lead needlessly take his shirt off. Don’t worry ladies, he does take his shirt off. When he does, it’s not about him taking his shirt off just to take his shirt off. The focus of the scene stays on what it should, and not Theo’s body.
So ladies, with these reasons I believe your man will enjoy going to see Divergent with you. And if you have persuaded him to read the books, then he should want to see it as much as you do. I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts and opinions, as I enjoyed sharing them with you.
