The Hollywood Reporter released an exclusive stating that Fifty Shades Darker’s script will be written by author EL James‘ husband: Niall Leonard. What does this mean for the sequel? Honestly at this point who really knows.
Fifty Shades of Grey was a huge success, in my opinion, and I think a lot of fans agree that writer Kelly Marcel and director Sam Taylor-Johnson did a fantastic job. Neither of the two are returning to work on the sequel, and at this point there still isn’t an answer to who’s directing the film, but now we have a screenwriter.
Niall Leonard, who is married and has two sons with the British author, is an author himself, in addition to being a screenwriter. He’s written for the British TV shows Air Force One Is Down and Wire in the Blood, among others. He’s also the author of the Crusher book series. He also worked on the script for the first Fifty Shades but was not credited.
“Niall is an outstanding writer in his own right, with multiple established credits, and we are lucky to have him join Team Fifty,” says producer Michael De Luca in a statement to THR.

This could be something great for fans of the book. Again, I think Kelly Marcel and Sam T-J did a good job with the first, but I know there were some things left out that would’ve been nice to see. I just thank the stars they had the decency to remove the tampon scene… but in any case it was still a good movie. But having someone closer to home for James could help give her the creative freedom she needs to help make the film as true to the book as possible. The thing about adaptations is not everything can fit into a two hour time slot, and there’s really no reason to fret over it until we are seeing the finished product. So for now all we can do is sit back, wait for a director to be announced, and hope that we get some shirtless Christian Grey stills sooner rather than later! Oh and some news on Mrs. Robinson’s casting would be nice too.
Don’t forget, Fifty Shades of Grey will be out on digital HD come May 1st, and Blu Ray/DVD on May 8th! I can’t wait to see the alternate ending. What special feature are you looking forward to most?
