As I’m sure you will come to find out in the future on this site… I am a HUGE Disney nerd. Huge. I keep an Annual Pass to Disneyland and it is my happy place. So when I heard “Maleficent” was coming to theaters… I was extremely excited. Watching “Sleeping Beauty” on a Sunday night during “Wonderful World of Disney” is one of my earliest childhood memories and is the first Disney movie I remember watching so it holds a special place in my heart. My oldest daughter was obsessed with Aurora as a toddler and we affectionately call my BFF Melissa… Melissafent. In fact, my kids thought for years that was how you pronounced Maleficent!
Saturday I packed up my family and bff and husband and we were off to see Maleficent! As a whole I think the movie was good a solid B+, but not as good as I was hoping.

As I was saying, I give “Maleficent” a solid B+. I really wish it were more but there were some things that I just didn’t love and that made the grade go down.
However let me state this fact: Angelina Jolie was BORN to play Maleficent! Oh my gosh. She embodied her and was hauntingly brilliant. She embodied this character perfectly. When placing her curse on baby Aurora… GOOSEBUMPS!
The things I loved about the movie: I loved the back story. Maleficent was a good fairy. She was beautiful, and had her heart broken, by Stefan (KING Stefan, Aurora’s Daddy!). Which I thought was brilliant for a back story because it gives a REASON why Maleficent was so angry and the “mountains rumbled with her frustration”. I loved seeing this side of her. I LOVED that Maleficent protected Aurora as she grew. That she grew to love her “Beasty”.
I absolutely adored Vivienne Jolie-Pitt’s cameo in the film as a young Aurora. Her interaction with her mother as Maleficent was just so so cute. “Up up!”…. It melted my heart and was one of the best scenes in the film.
The film was beautiful to watch. I did not see it in 3D but thought the scenery was really pretty. Almost an Avatar/Alice in Wonderland vibe.
I loved the plot twist at the end… Without getting into TOO much detail or giving away a TON of spoilery info… I love the fact that “True Love” doesn’t have to be romantic but I did feel like Disney just did this in “Frozen” as well.
Now to the things that bugged me. I hated, hated, hated the actor that portrayed Stefan (Sharlto Copley). His accent was terrible and not consistent. I did like where they took his character in the story, but hated the acting.
I hated what they turned the 3 “Good” fairies into. They portrayed them as dumb annoying idiots, while also changing their names. (Flittle, Knotgrass and Thistletwit?!) I don’t understand that change. I ended up being really annoyed at them. I do think they portrayed them this way so we would feel more for Maleficent, but as a fan of sleeping beauty and “Merryweather”, It saddened me a bit.
I actually really loved that Maleficent’s “Pet” crow would turn into a Human (Diaval) played by Sam Riley (whom I love!) But it seriously bugged me that HE (SPOILER) is who turned into the dragon… NOT Maleficent!
I would have liked to see more of Prince Phillip (Brenton Thwaites). Their meeting was so brief… they could have at least added the line “But I’ve met you before, Once upon a Dream“! I mean come on!
Now to Aurora… Nothing against Elle Fanning, But I just didn’t feel that she portrayed one of my favorite Disney princess’ well. She wasn’t as beautiful as the character Aurora is presented to be. Her acting was just so/so for me.
In conclusion… Angelina Jolie is definitely the show stealer in this movie. Is it worth seeing in the theater? Yes for sure! I am glad I saw it however I don’t think I will be telling my friends, “You HAVE to go see this!”
