Team Epic Reads is asking us to try out something called the “69 Test”! Yes, we know that “69” provokes some innuendo, but we’re not talking about anything dirty here. Instead, picture this scene that’s probably really familiar: you’re at your local book store just browsing, and a book cover catches your attention. The title sounds interesting. You read the summary on the back, and you’re still intrigued, but how do you really know if you’ll like the book? Well, according to Epic Reads, the 69 Test will help!
In his 2006 novel, How to Read a Novel: A User’s Guide, John Sutherland surmised that in order to determine whether or not you’ll enjoy a book, you should flip to page sixty-nine and read that page only. If you like that page, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll like the rest of the novel too. Why? According to him, a lot of action seems to happen right around then for novels.
Sounds easy enough! And thanks to Epic Reads, you can give it a try without leaving the house. They’ve provided excerpts of the 69th page from 20 different YA novels. Go HERE to try it out and let us know if you think the test works!
