Deadline announced today that Warner Brothers studios has won the film rights to the YA series The Selection by Kiera Cass. Huge congrats to Kiera, she is a wonderful human being and this is some extremely exciting news!
If you don’t already know what The Selection is, here’s a synopsis for your eyes to feast upon:
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks. Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself–and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
Katie Lovejoy (‘Arsonist’s Love Story’) is set to adapt it, and she has a lot to live up to. This series is widely loved in the young adult community, and while 3 books are already released, there are 2 more still to come. Which is why in my opinion this series would’ve made a better tv show. It would’ve been bigger than The Bachelor! And everyone loves The Bachelor. So I was really interested when I read this portion of Deadline’s article:
The Selection has been a hot title in television, with the CW trying hard to launch a Selection series, ordering two consecutive pilots, starring Aimee Teegarden and Yael Grobglas, respectively, in 2012 and 2013. They were produced by Warner Bros. sibling Warner Bros. TV, with Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain as writers.
TV would be my choice, but I’m still excited for films. They are quick fun reads and I think they can be adapted well. My only concern is that there’s 5 books, and let’s face it, this isn’t exactly Harry Potter we’re talking about… I don’t know that it could live up to the possibility of 5 or more movies. But we’ll keep tabs on this ongoing project for sure. I’m curious about casting, we’ll have to talk a bit more about that later 😉
For now, if you haven’t read the books, go ahead and pick them up. Give them a try. This is what some of here at Hashtag Avenue said when we read the first of The Selection series:
April – “Absolutely fell in LOVE with this book and it’s characters!! Fantastic! Can’t wait for book 2!!! I am completely torn between the two main male characters and I THINK I know which team I’m on, but I’m not ready to admit it yet! I literally read this in about 6 hours. So good!” – 5 Stars
Jennifer – “Ahh… I want more book!! I can’t believe I read it in a day, I could not put it down. I can’t wait until the next book.” – 5 Stars
Kylie – “I didn’t love love love it like so many of my friends, but I did enjoy it a lot. It’s more of a 4.5 star rating, and I have hopes that the next two I’ll enjoy even more. Things just moved a tad bit slow for me. As for the boys, well I’ve come to the conclusion that Aspen is a butt, but I still don’t think I’m totally hooked on Maxon yet either. I did really enjoy it though and I wish I would’ve just ordered all 3 at the same time because now I have to wait til tomorrow to start The Elite.” – 4.5 Stars
